Chase suspect surrenders to rangers…

In July of 1994, at the request of Chief Ranger Dan Sholly, I responded to West Yellowstone as a crisis negotiator to assist Yellowstone West District rangers and Gallatin County deputies.

After a high speed chase on Highway 191, the suspect pulled over and abandoned his car and disappeared in the woods. Hours later he called the Yellowstone Communication Center from a bar near Hebgen Lake to surrender. That call was transfered to the West District Ranger Station where we spoke with him about surrendering to rangers. At one point while talking with us, he grew impatient and told us that the bar was closing and when would the rangers get there.

We reassured him that rangers were on their way and would be there shortly and to follow their instructions when he exited the bar. He was taken into custody without incident.
