Beyond the Call of Doody

Law Enforcement Rangers are on the front lines protecting our natural treasures, assisting visitors, patrolling campgrounds, and providing emergency medical services.

The Park Service Maintenance Division has an enormous task of maintenance activities that include carpentry, painting, cement finishing, plumbing, roofing, electrical, masonry, janitorial, grounds keeping, roads, culverts, trails, corrals, and fence repair.

“611 Gale. 700.”

“611 Gale. Fishing Bridge Village Area.”

“611 Gale.  We Just got a call from a visitor who has lost her keys in a comfort station at Mary Bay.  Are you available?”

“611 Gale. Copy. Enroute.”

After meeting with a young woman who was quite embarrassed about dropping her car keys into the toilet, I assured her that I would do my best to retrieve her keys.

I knew this would have to be a Joint Operation with the Maintenance Division and so did Bruce Sefton who was already on his way to give me a helping hand.

“Can you guys really get my keys out of that toilet or should I call Triple A?”

Bruce did his best to handle this professionally and keep from smiling in front of a distressed visitor.

“We’ll get her done.  Not to worry.”

Masks on.

I provided light and Bruce went in so to speak.

Bruce was able hit the target and bring up the car keys on his first attempt using an improvised hook, line, and sinker.

And that is no fish story.
